Fire Mitigation
Fire Mitigation
Hundreds of wildfires happen annually in British Columbia and millions of dollars are
spent trying to suppress them. Wildfires threaten communities, homes, property, families and
animals. The big question is what can we do to prevent wildfires?
Since Timberland Solutions is based in the Okanagan we have personally felt the effects
of uncontrolled wildfires. We want to help you feel safer and in more control of what happens to
your property. The new term "firescaping" has since arisen from the need to be personally
proactive in fire prevention when landscaping. Timberland Solutions can help with those large
firescaping projects. Mulching can help protect a vulnerable area by eliminating dead and
decaying matter that fuels fires. Be proactive. Create a perimeter to protect your home and
assets from potential wildfires. Removing fire fuels will protect yourself and your community from
extensive fire damage.
Wildfires have been so suppressed in the past years to the point that natural burning is
no longer occurring as often, resulting in very dense forests as fire fuels accumulate. These
fuels act as a ladder allowing ground fires to climb up the canopy creating much larger, less
controllable fires. It is better to have smaller, more frequent and manageable wildfires, than
larger, more uncontrollable ones. Wildfires are natural and a vital process for the health of a
forest ecosystem. Clearing excessive vegetation makes them easier to manage and lowers the
intensity of wildfires when they do happen.
Although mulch dries faster and burns quicker, it also decomposes faster, keeps fires
from traveling up to the canopy and is a preventative measure that can be used to lower wildfire
intensity. Vegetation management helps the forest by encouraging other species of trees to
mature, wildlife populations to grow and for safer navigation of the forests. Mulching is
eco-friendly, as mulch gives nutrients back to the earth and allows for regrowth with minimal
ground disturbance or brush pile burning. Vegetation management encourages the forest by
allowing other species of trees to mature, wildlife populations to grow and for safer navigation of
the forests. By mulching fire fuels like fallen trees, debris and dense brush we can lower the risk
of wildfires from becoming fierce canopy fires. Timberland's goal is to help home and property
owners feel safer and do their part in fire prevention.
